My Experience with Essential Oils and Their Subtle Influence
For as long as I can remember, natural remedies have captivated me, especially the gentle ways plants offer healing and comfort. Though I’d known about essential oils for years, it wasn’t until late December last year that I decided to give them a try. What began as a simple curiosity—an urge to explore the natural world more deeply—has now, nearly a year later, become a quiet ritual in my life. Essential oils have subtly woven themselves into my days, lifting my mood and supporting my health in ways that feel both gentle and lasting.
The first essential oil I tried was peppermint, chosen specifically to tackle my persistent dry cough. I’d done a bit of research beforehand, and peppermint seemed like a good match since I was already familiar with its scent. I’d often make tea with fresh peppermint leaves from my garden, enjoying its refreshing aroma. I figured that the essential oil, being a more concentrated form, might be even more effective. The effects of the peppermint oil weren’t immediate; they were gentle, almost unnoticeable at first. I didn’t experience a sudden breakthrough, but gradually, I realized that my cough had softened, then nearly disappeared. Now, I’d say it’s 99% gone, something I hadn’t achieved even with various other remedies. It felt rewarding, like the power of nature was working with my body in its own quiet way. After such a positive experience with peppermint, I was inspired to explore other varieties. Each oil has a character of its own, and I’ve come to appreciate the unique benefits they offer. Among the varieties I’ve experimented with, a few have really stood out:
Peppermint: Peppermint remains my go-to for any respiratory issues and for that instant refreshment boost. Its cool, invigorating scent clears my mind and breath, making it feel like I’ve hit a natural reset button. It’s especially helpful in keeping my dry cough under control, and the freshness it brings is hard to match.
Lavender: Lavender is my comfort scent, best enjoyed at night as I drift off to sleep. It calms me down after a long day, relaxing my mind and body, as if the scent itself is a soft lullaby, carrying me into a restful night.
Jasmine: Jasmine brings a sense of joy and calm, almost like a gentle smile in a bottle. Its sweet, floral fragrance feels uniquely feminine, and I find myself reaching for it whenever I need a mood lift. It’s a reminder of simple, pure joy.
Sandalwood: Sandalwood is the first essential oil I tried for grounding, and it’s become essential in my meditation practice. There’s a rich warmth to the scent that centers me, making it perfect for moments of reflection and inner peace.
Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus is my go-to whenever I feel congested or blocked up. Like peppermint, it clears my breath, but it’s also my remedy against flu symptoms, especially when I’m dealing with a stuffy nose. Just a sniff feels like it’s opening the airways.
Frankincense: Frankincense is my second grounding essential oil, and its scent feels almost sacred, like stepping into a quiet, reverent space. I use it primarily for grounding, as the fragrance has a deeply spiritual quality that enhances any moment of meditation or stillness.
I have three ways of using essential oils, all for external purposes only. For a quick and direct experience, I’ll inhale them straight from the lid, similar to an inhaler. This method is especially effective with peppermint and eucalyptus—just one whiff feels like a mini refresh. It’s also economical; even a small 10ml bottle can last for months when used this way. My second method is with a diffuser, but instead of the typical water-based device, I use black volcanic stones. These stones have a unique ability to absorb and slowly release the oils, so their scent lingers gently over time. They’re affordable, visually pleasing, and grounding, adding an extra layer of comfort. The third way I use essential oils is by blending them with a carrier oil, specifically cold-pressed golden jojoba oil. Using a carrier oil is essential for safely applying essential oils to the skin, as it dilutes the concentrated oil, making it gentler and reducing any risk of irritation. I chose jojoba oil over other carrier oils because it’s remarkably close to the skin’s natural sebum, making it highly compatible with most skin types and less likely to clog pores. Unlike heavier oils, jojoba absorbs easily, delivering the essential oils’ benefits in a light, non-greasy way. Plus, the cold-pressed version retains more of the natural nutrients, enhancing its purity and keeping it as close to the original plant source as possible.
What I appreciate most about essential oils is their purity. Unlike synthetic fragrances, which can be overwhelming, essential oils are 100% plant extracts, making them feel more harmonious and gentler on the senses. From my experience, any essential oil scent—no matter the variety—is surprisingly tolerable, as it carries the plant’s natural and authentic essence. In contrast, other natural fragrances, even if free from chemicals, often go through refining processes that can make their scent feel less genuine or altered. Essential oils, on the other hand, retain that unrefined, original aroma that feels both familiar and powerful. A word of caution, though: some products labeled as “fragrance oils” might appear similar to essential oils but aren’t truly plant extracts. Fragrance oils are crafted to deliver a stronger, longer-lasting scent, but they lack the natural essence that pure essential oils provide. While fragrance oils can be appealing for their intense aroma, they don't offer the same therapeutic qualities found in genuine essential oils.
Through this journey, I’ve found essential oils to be a subtle but profound addition to my life. Their influence isn’t loud or forceful; instead, it feels like they’re gently nudging my body and mind toward a more balanced, centered state. Each time I use them, there’s a sense of reconnecting with something natural and timeless—a quiet reminder of how simple, plant-based remedies have been trusted for centuries. In a world filled with quick fixes, synthetic fragrances, and artificial solutions, there’s something deeply satisfying in returning to the pure essence of nature in each drop. It’s a small ritual, yet one that feels like a gift, bringing a touch of calm and authenticity into my daily routine.
